About
Simply put, my artworks are a reflection of the things around us that we take for granted every day…….
On the surface, my artwork looks as if a piece of popular culture has been regurgitated onto the canvas. Perhaps this is fair if the work were done in a vacuum.
Looking around I see so much waste. It astounds me the amount the people throw away, don’t reuse or don’t appreciate. The act of recycling has become very fashionable, having that (plastic) recycling bin out of the front of your house once a week tells your neighbours that you’re a good citizen. Perhaps you’ll put the fancy wine bottles on top telling the world how refined your tastes are, or in truth what a good consumer you have become.
My favourite day of the week is recycling day as I get to see all those forgotten works of art. Amazing graphics on the beer boxes, wonderfully designed characters on cereal boxes and tiny miniatures we like to throw out, the bottle caps.
Imagine the designers of these products making amazing feats of advertising, only to have them constantly thrown out. While this is the nature of commercial design, it seems a shame that so much of this is never appreciated.
By enlarging these tiny forgotten things and painting them in oils on canvas, it seems to give them importance. I would just like people to think about the little things in life rather than rushing around endlessly buying the next big thing.
