Hi, my name’s Rachel Hammond while I was born in New Zealand, I grew up & went to school in Australia. My grandmother, Pearl Daniels was an artist in the Canterbury region for many years and ever since I was 14, that was all I wanted to be…..
I graduated from high school in Grafton on the north coast of New South Wales completing 3 unit Art and won the Excellence award for 2 and 3 unit Art.
I was accepted into the BA Graphic Design at Canberra University and completed 2 of the 3 years before changing my majors to Law & Psychology !!!
On my return to New Zealand, I played around with various art forms trying to find one which suited me. There was coloured clay, stoneware, Papier Mache, wirework, drawing, photography, computer generated design, but at the moment have found oil painting to be the thing i enjoy most.
My painting examples here are from a few series I have done and am doing.
My coin art series sold out and I was asked to paint the imperial coins so it went from there….

Drawings
The first 2 drawings were a dyptich done in aquarelles… so drawing and painting…..
I dont have many examples of drawing as I’m not a sketcher but tend to draw with one hard outline… which is why I gravitate to more pop art styles…
Mixed Media / Graphic Design /Photography
Below, the self portrait in Diet coke…. I saved diet coke labels for years… the one constant in my life. I used acid free silicon to attach them to a deep canvas then used oil paint to do the portrait. 20″x12″
Also included in the gallery are 2 of the mockups done for a Rolling Stone cover which included getting a model and doing everything from there.

Working Drawings and Sketch book entries
Most of my preliminary drawings are done in the closest possible pen which is usually ink ! I use the computer more now to draw as this can be done with 2 fingers (my hand function is bad when clutching a pen….) Mostly words help the process…
